Some people believe that in other to be effective, political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandoned principles for the sake of compromise. Others believe that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives.

Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.

It is disheartening that over the years many political leaders have largely forgotten in practices the main reason (s) behind their election into such political offices. Additionally, several countries have also suffered both economic and human-development retardation in growth relatively due to the unwillingness of the political leaders of such countries to embrace the opinion of the led. This is why I strongly align my thoughts and stand with the view that suggests effective political leaders should yield to the opinion of the public and abandoned principles for the sake of compromise.

I will begin by examining the view that suggests that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the quality to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Erroneously, it is believed by a few that adhering to self-galvanized rules of engagement called “principles” is a demonstration of effectiveness in leadership without considering the prose that provides for compromise in all relationships of human existence especially political. In fact, it is highly believed by a wider school of thought that one’s ability to bend once in a while to the yearnings of others especially the ones you are leading is the true mark of effective and essential leadership.

Consequent upon the point presented above, it is super clear that an effective political leader should if not must yield to public opinion and abandon principles for the sake of compromise, which is highlighted in the first view of the topic question. This is essentially important because a great leader should be able to listen to public opinion and make necessary adjustments as a way of showing compromise and demonstrating respect for the opinion of the people he/she is leading. Recently, the number one citizen of the world, the president of the United States of America-President Joe Bidden, knelt before a little boy; whose father was allegedly killed by a federal agent not just to appeal for mercy but to also solicit his view (s) in handling the murder case. That act of humility by the president was not viewed as a weakness on his part but rather gained global attention, honour and mostly proved his ability to effectively manage such affairs of the people he is leading.

Moreso, political leaders actually exist to serve the people. Myles Munrone Said “When a purpose is not known abuse is inevitable”, sadly most political leaders who are glued to their principles and objectives represent the portion of the political populace who obviously have forgotten the reason (s) why they were elected in the first instance. Furthermore, considering the fact that we are now in the 5th Industrial revolution where public opinions, sentiments and views are highly powerful, capable of truncating even governments like we have seen in recent times in Libya, Iraq and the rest, not shifting grounds on the basis of one’s principles is not a wise thing to do. If this is true then it is of great essence that any political leader who wishes to be effective should be able to entertain compromise and respect public opinion.

Conclusively, it is evident that some people might be of the view that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability of such a leader to remain consistently committed to his/her principles or objectives. This awkward way of thinking is the reason why several political leaders are grounded today and many countries in political turmoil. In every political setting people-inclusion is a virtue and any leader that wants to be effective must have it.
